French traveler Jean-Jacques Saven, who was planning to cross the Atlantic Ocean alone in a canoe boat, was found dead near the Azores, the BBC reported, citing a Facebook page dedicated to the challenge.

“Unfortunately, this time the ocean was stronger than our friend, who loved sailing and the sea so much,” said a statement from his supporters.

According to the data, the 75-year-old former military paratrooper activated two emergency beacons on Thursday night, after which the connection with him failed. A day later, the boat was found near the Azores.

Saven left Sagres for southern Portugal on January 1st, and last week celebrated his 75th birthday at sea with goose liver and champagne.

On Wednesday, he wrote on Facebook that there were strong winds that extended his journey by 900 km (560 miles), and said he had problems with his solar energy. But he added: “Rest assured, I’m not in danger!”

In 2019, Saven crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a barrel.
