A cashier at a gas station was shot dead as a result of a dispute over wearing a mask to protect against the coronavirus. The tragedy was reported by BTA, citing a statement from the German prosecutor’s office.
A 49-year-old man, a customer at a gas station in the West German town of Idar-Oberstein, was furious after an employee refused to sell him beer because he was not wearing a mask to cover his nose and mouth.
This was announced by Chief Prosecutor Kai Furman in the city of Trier.
The attacker admitted that he killed the 20-year-old student with a shot to the head and said that the severity of the pandemic made him do it, said Furman.
The perpetrator felt cornered and “saw no other way out” but to set an example. His victim appeared “responsible for the overall situation because he applied the rules,” the prosecutor stressed.
According to the investigation, the 49-year-old attacker entered the gas station on Saturday night without a mask and tried to buy 12 beers. The cashier paid attention to the requirement to wear a mask.
The customer returned an hour later wearing a mask and tried again to buy beers. As he tried to buy the beers, he pulled his protective mask down. The cashier again advised him to comply with the requirement to wear masks, during which the perpetrator shot him.
Police arrested him the next morning in the town of Idar-Oberstein.
