A 14-year-old girl from Great Britain, who was suffering from a rare form of terminal cancer, won in court, shortly before she died, the right to be cryogenic in the USA.
Cryogenics is a controversial procedure for preserving the body in liquid nitrogen at temperatures below minus 130 degrees Celsius, which is performed in the US and Russia.
To persuade the court to allow her body to freeze, the girl sent a letter, she said. The Guardian: “I was asked to explain why I want this unusual thing. I’m only 14 years old and I don’t want to die, but I know I’m going to die. I think being cryogenic gives me a chance to be healed and awakened, even over hundreds year old.
I don’t want to be buried. I want to live longer and I think that in the future they will find a treatment for my cancer and wake me up. I want to have this chance. That is my wish. “
The girl was supported in her decision by her mother, but not by her father.
Her parents were separated, and the child had not seen her father since 2008. After learning that her daughter was ill, the man tried to contact the girl, but she refused.
“Even if a treatment is found (for cancer – n.red.) And it is brought back to life, let’s say, in 200 years, it may not find any relatives in life, it may not – to remember things and to be in a desperate situation, given the fact that he is only 14 years old and is in the USA “. This is how the father motivated his decision not to freeze his daughter in court.
In the end, the girl’s wish, which legally could not leave a will, was respected. Towards the end of the hearings, the father was convinced.
The case, an exceptional one, as the judge admits, reached the average about a month after the girl’s death, because she expressly requested that the press not have access to information until after her death.
As for the cost of cryogenics, £ 37,000, it is borne by the girl’s family.
