India’s Cinema Industry Voices Concerns Over Netflix-Warner Bros. Discovery Merger
Mumbai – The Multiplex association of India (MAI) has voiced apprehension regarding Netflix’s $82.7 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, citing potential disruption to theatrical film releases in India. The deal, announced December 5, is slated for completion following the separation of Warner Bros.Discovery’s Global Networks division in Q3 2026.
While Netflix has affirmed its intention to maintain Warner Bros.’ cinema operations, the MAI cautioned that Netflix’s historical release strategies could curtail the number of films shown in theaters and shorten their theatrical runs.
“Cinemas in India depend on a consistent stream of major studio films to sustain audience engagement and profitability,” stated Kamal Gianchandani, President of MAI. He further emphasized the broader economic impact of the cinema industry, noting its support for employment across production, distribution, exhibition, and food & beverage sectors.
The MAI expressed concern that limited theatrical releases from Netflix could diminish film availability and reduce the time movies are accessible on the big screen. The association confirmed it will continue to present its concerns to regulatory bodies both within India and internationally.
the merger has garnered global attention, underscoring the evolving relationship between streaming services and traditional cinema exhibition.
