California Reports Surge in Mushroom Poisonings, Issues Urgent Warning
SACRAMENTO, CA – December 6, 2025 – California health officials are sounding the alarm over a dramatic increase in mushroom poisoning cases across the state, with a particularly concerning rise in severe illnesses requiring hospitalization. The California Poison Control System (CPCS) has reported a meaningful uptick in calls related to mushroom ingestion, prompting warnings to residents about the dangers of foraging for wild mushrooms.
This year has seen a marked escalation in incidents, fueled by recent rainfall creating ideal growing conditions for both edible and highly toxic mushroom species. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is urging caution, emphasizing that accurately identifying mushrooms is extremely difficult and misidentification can have life-threatening consequences. Symptoms of mushroom poisoning can range from gastrointestinal distress to liver failure, and can appear hours after ingestion, making prompt medical attention crucial.
The CDPH reports that while cases fluctuate seasonally, the current surge is exceeding typical levels. Poison control experts emphasize that there is no single characteristic that reliably distinguishes a poisonous mushroom from a safe one. Many toxic varieties closely resemble edible species, leading to accidental consumption.
“Mushroom poisoning can be incredibly serious, and even deadly,” stated a CPCS representative. “We are seeing a concerning number of cases where individuals have become severely ill after consuming wild mushrooms they believed to be safe.”
For those who suspect mushroom poisoning, immediate contact with the CPCS at 1-800-222-1222 is advised. Additional facts and resources are available on the CDPH website: https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CCDPHP/DEODC/EHIB/Pages/EIS/Poisonous-Mushrooms.aspx.
