R&B singer Alexander O’Neal and his wife, Cynthia, narrowly escaped a fire at their apartment on Friday, just weeks after the passing of a close friend and former bandmate. O’Neal discovered his oxygen tube was on fire before the blaze spread, prompting a frantic evacuation.
The incident occurred while O’Neal, a former collaborator with Prince and known for hits like “Never Knew Love Like This,” was still reeling from the recent death of The Time drummer Jellybean Johnson, who passed away in late November.Cynthia O’Neal reports her husband was unaware of Johnson’s death due to being on life support at the time news broke.The couple is now seeking temporary shelter with family as they assess their next steps following the devastating fire.
According to Cynthia O’Neal, her husband noticed his oxygen tube ablaze and immediatly alerted her. They were able to escape the apartment, though they lost their belongings in the fire. Despite the loss, Cynthia remained optimistic, stating, “We are so happy to be alive. We may not have a toothbrush, but we have a car! Our spirits remain good and we are moving forward.”
O’Neal launched a accomplished solo career after leaving The Time, achieving recognition with songs including “wherever You Will Go” and “Sentimental.” He and johnson maintained a friendship following his departure from the band. The couple is currently staying with family while they begin to rebuild.
