allentown, PA – The Wilkes University women’s wrestling team suffered a 28-18 defeat against Cedar Crest College Friday night, marking their first loss of the season.
The Colonels dropped to 1-1 in dual match competition, while Cedar Crest extended its record to 6-1. The result highlights the growing competitiveness of women’s wrestling and the challenges Wilkes faces as a program continuing to build momentum. The team will look to rebound at the golden Wolves Open hosted by Alvernia University on Sunday, December 14th, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Cedar crest opened the match with a narrow 11-10 decision by Mary Lopez over Gabriela vazquez at 103-pounds, establishing an early 3-1 lead. Wilkes responded as Jordyn Suhina secured a 7-0 decision at 110-pounds, shifting the advantage to the Colonels, 4-3.
The Falcons then rallied with three consecutive victories – a fall by Andi Bibeau over G. riley in 32 seconds at 117-pounds, a technical fall by Madacyn Snyder against H. Robinson at 124-pounds, and a fall by Alaina Stanford over J.Henderson at 131-pounds - to take an 18-4 lead.
Wilkes battled back with consecutive falls of their own. Milly Hughes pinned Adriana Dias in just 34 seconds at 138-pounds, and Alyssa McIntosh followed with a technical fall over Maddie Stultz at 145-pounds, narrowing the gap to 18-13.
Cedar Crest sealed the victory with a fall by Symarah Drey over K. O’Brien at 160-pounds and a forfeit at 207-pounds. Kimberlee Hechler earned a final pin for wilkes, defeating Janeyda Ortiz in 2:40 at 180-pounds.
