Controversial Refereeing decisions mar Monaco’s Victory Over PSG
MONACO – AS Monaco secured a 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday during Ligue 1’s 14th matchday, ending PSG’s recent unbeaten streak. However, the match is being overshadowed by significant controversy surrounding the officiating of referee Clément Turpin, sparking outrage from both clubs and expert analysis.
PSG suffered their second league defeat of the season despite a second-half period playing with a numerical advantage following Thilo Kehrer’s 79th-minute expulsion. The flashpoint of the match occurred in the first half when PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier was the victim of a risky tackle by Monaco’s Lamine Camara inside the penalty area. Camara received only a yellow card, a decision widely questioned given the potential for serious injury.
PSG manager Luis Enrique expressed his frustration in a post-match press conference. “You have to ask whoever decided,” he stated, pointedly adding,”I would like to talk a lot,a lot,but I prefer to say that Lucas Chevalier was very lucky today. You have to ask the question: ‘Why didn’t the referee go see the footage?’ to the person who decided not to see them. I think that’s enough. You have to read between the lines.”
Remarkably, even the winning side, AS Monaco, voiced concerns about the consistency of the refereeing.Monaco’s general director, Thiago scuro, highlighted the issue in the mixed zone. “For me, its not a red card (Lamine Camara). for me, it’s not a red for Thilo Kehrer… I don’t know what type of interpretation they have, but that doesn’t solve the problem when you get a call during the week. Peopel apologized for the mistake, but the following week the mistakes continue,” he said.
Adding further weight to the criticism, Saïd Ennjimi, a former international referee and consultant for L’Équipe, offered a stark assessment of Camara’s tackle. “There are 100 times red, and it’s quite astounding and illogical that that’s not the case. The Monegasque has absolutely no chance of having the ball. It’s a tackle off the ground and very late.He grabs Chevalier’s ankle and could have injured him,” Ennjimi declared.
The incident is likely to fuel further debate about the implementation and consistency of video assistant referee (VAR) protocols in Ligue 1, and raises questions about the standard of officiating at the highest level of French football.
