CONCORD, N.C. - A suspect remains at large following a police chase that ended in a fatal collision in Concord Monday night, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.Around 11 p.m. on Nov. 24, a trooper observed a red Chevrolet Camaro traveling northbound on I-85 at mile marker 49 at a high rate of speed. The vehicle reached 111 mph in a 65-mph zone.
the trooper initiated a traffic stop on the Camaro near mile marker 52 on poplar Tent Road. Upon noticing signs of impairment, the trooper requested the driverS license. The driver then fled.
The suspect exited I-85 at George Liles Blvd (mile marker 54) and, failing to stop at a red light, collided with a gray Cadillac traveling west. The impact caused the Cadillac to catch fire.
The Camaro driver fled the scene on foot.
First responders extracted the driver of the cadillac, identified as Calvin Leon Costner, 40, of Concord, but he died at the scene despite life-saving efforts.One individual sustained minor burns while attempting to rescue Costner. No passengers were in either vehicle.
Law enforcement conducted a search for the suspect but were unable to locate them. Authorities have not released the suspect’s name or description.
The State Highway Patrol asks anyone with information regarding the examination to contact them.
