St. Joseph Hospital Enhances Lung Cancer Detection with Robotic Technology

Providence St. Joseph hospital Eureka is now utilizing the Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy Platform, a new technology designed to improve the diagnosis of lung cancer. The hospital announced the addition of the system during Lung Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting its potential to increase early detection rates in a region with higher-than-average smoking rates.

Currently,17% of Humboldt County residents smoke, exceeding the statewide average of 10%,placing the local population at increased risk for lung cancer. Early diagnosis is crucial, as fewer than one-third of those diagnosed with lung cancer survive beyond five years, but screening significantly improves outcomes.

The Ion robot allows for minimally invasive and precise biopsies of lung nodules, even those previously arduous to reach.Dr. Robert young, a pulmonologist at providence St. Joseph Hospital Eureka, board-certified in pulmonary critical care, is leading the implementation of the technology.

“The Ion robot represents a major advancement in lung cancer diagnostics in our area,” Dr. Young stated. “The precision allows us to safely reach and biopsy small nodules deep within the lung that were previously difficult to access. This means we can diagnose cancer earlier, reduce complications and provide patients with answers faster, which is critical in guiding treatment decisions.”

Alongside the robotic bronchoscopy, the hospital offers annual low-dose CT scans for eligible adults. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening for individuals aged 50 to 80 with a 20 pack-year smoking history, including current and recent former smokers (within the past 15 years). Radiologists assess scan results using a Lung-RADS score, and suspicious findings are reviewed by a multidisciplinary team of specialists. A dedicated screening coordinator ensures timely follow-up care.

“Early detection is the moast powerful tool we have in the fight against lung cancer,” said Priscilla Lynn, director of cancer and infusion services at Providence St. Joseph Hospital Eureka. “The Ion robot’s advanced technology and local access to low-dose CT screening gives our patients the best chance at timely diagnosis, effective treatment and improved outcomes.”

Patients who meet the screening criteria are encouraged to discuss options with their healthcare provider or call 707-719-0550, option 2, to schedule an exam.
