WASHINGTON – Former fugees member Pras Michel was sentenced to 14 years in prison on Tuesday for orchestrating an illegal campaign finance scheme designed to influence the 2012 re-election of President Barack Obama. The conviction and sentencing conclude a high-profile case revealing a complex web of foreign money, Hollywood connections, and alleged attempts to obstruct a federal investigation.
The case centers on Michel’s acceptance of over $120 million from Malaysian financier Jho Low, a central figure in the 1MDB scandal, and his subsequent funneling of funds through straw donors to the Obama campaign. The Justice Department alleged Michel also attempted to interfere with their investigation into Low, and committed perjury during trial. This case underscores the serious legal consequences of foreign interference in U.S.elections and the potential for illicit funds to corrupt the political process.
Prosecutors detailed how Low sought access to obama, not to advance specific policy goals, but to secure a photograph with the then-President. Michel’s attorneys argued Low’s motivation was simply a photo opportunity.Despite this defense, a jury found Michel guilty in April of conspiracy to violate campaign finance laws, making false statements, and obstructing justice.
Evidence presented at trial showed Michel attempted to end the Justice Department’s investigation into Low and tampered with witnesses. Low, currently a fugitive, financed the film the Wolf of Wall Street starring Leonardo DiCaprio and has maintained his innocence.
In August 2024,Michel’s request for a new trial was denied by the judge, who cited errors during the trial – including the use of a generative AI program by his defense attorney during closing arguments – but resolute they did not constitute a serious miscarriage of justice. The 14-year sentence reflects the severity of the crimes and aims to deter similar attempts to undermine the integrity of U.S. elections.
