‘Game Changer’: Queensland gps Gain authority to Diagnose and Treat adult ADHD
Brisbane, QLD – In a landmark decision poised to dramatically improve access to care, Queensland Health has empowered all GPs to initiate, modify, and continue prescribing medication for adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). the move, confirmed following agreement from every state, territory and federal health minister, bypasses previous restrictions requiring specialist referral for diagnosis and treatment.
Previously, navigating ADHD care involved lengthy wait times for specialist appointments and presented financial barriers for many patients. This reform directly addresses those challenges, enabling individuals to receive timely and affordable support from their trusted family doctor. Queensland Minister for Health, Shannon Nicholls, hailed the change as ”a game changer” and ”a life changer,” emphasizing the potential to deliver “outstanding ADHD care…faster, closer to home and more affordably.”
The decision stems from ongoing discussions regarding streamlined ADHD pathways and was announced at the GP25 conference. Minister Nicholls underscored the central role of GPs, stating, “GPs are at the heart of our communities,” and expressed confidence in collaborative implementation.
The reform impacts an estimated significant portion of the adult population, with ADHD prevalence rates continuing to rise. By expanding prescribing authority to primary care physicians, Queensland aims to alleviate pressure on specialist services and ensure equitable access to diagnosis and treatment for all adults experiencing ADHD symptoms.
