UVA Student Invited Her Cinematographer Father to Share His Work with Film Class
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – A University of Virginia student recently facilitated a unique learning chance for her classmates: a visit adn Q&A session with her father, acclaimed cinematographer Peter Deming. The event, centered around a screening of David LynchS “Mulholland Drive,” offered students in Assistant Professor Sean Duncan’s film course direct insight from a veteran of the industry.
Kate Deming, a second-year student at UVA, discovered the Lynch-focused course while planning her fall schedule and instantly suggested her father connect with Professor Duncan. Deming has worked extensively with director David Lynch, contributing to projects like “Lost Highway,” “Mulholland Drive,” and “Twin Peaks: The Return.” The visit provided a rare chance for students to hear firsthand about the technical and creative processes behind iconic films.
“I’m my dad’s biggest fan,” Kate Deming said. “I’m always bragging about him, and I think he’s too humble. Growing up on set and getting to see him in action,I just always want to give him the most credit and get him to share what he loves to do.”
Peter Deming’s career began early, bringing a then-three-month-old Kate to a commercial shoot for Estée Lauder. He recalled his daughter being ”pretty cranky” but noted she grew to enjoy set visits. Kate specifically remembers “Oz the Great and Powerful” as the first set she truly recalls, filming in Michigan during a summer when she attended camps alongside her father’s work.
