A 19-year-old P-plate driver is facing charges after a collision in Hornsby,Sydney,resulted in the deaths of a 33-year-old pregnant woman and her unborn child. The incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday at the entrance to a car park on George Street.
The tragedy unfolded when a silver Kia station wagon, after slowing to allow the eight-months-pregnant woman to cross the road, was struck from behind by a white BMW. The force of the impact propelled the station wagon forward, fatally striking the pedestrian. This incident underscores the devastating consequences of inattentive or reckless driving and has prompted a police inquiry.Emergency services arrived at the scene and immediately began treating the woman,who was then transported to Westmead Hospital in critical condition. Despite their efforts,both she and her baby died as a result of their injuries.
Police arrested the 19-year-old BMW driver at a home in Wahroonga at 12:45 a.m. on Saturday. He was taken to Hornsby Police Station, were inquiries are ongoing. Both he and the driver of the station wagon where uninjured and underwent mandatory testing at Hornsby Hospital. No passengers were present in either vehicle.
