Lisbon Faces Potential Dual Outbreaks of Mpox and Hepatitis A
Lisbon, Portugal – Community health centers operated by GAT – Grupo de Atividades em Treatments have recently identified new cases of mpox within the Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) population in the Greater Lisbon region. Together, GAT is reporting emerging cases of hepatitis A among MSM, raising concerns about a potential outbreak, according to a statement released by the organization on October 14, 2024.
GAT warns that a delayed public health response, similar to previous outbreaks, could exacerbate the situation, notably with the possibility of concurrent mpox and hepatitis A outbreaks. “History may be repeating itself and the public response cannot, once again, be late, especially with the possibility of two outbreaks occurring at the same time (mpox and hepatitis A),” the organization stated.
Community-based organizations like GAT Checkpoint LX have been instrumental in providing health services during previous outbreaks. GAT reports having urged health authorities to provide hepatitis A vaccinations free of charge, aligning with the Directorate-General for Health’s clinical Guidance Standard slated for publication in the summer of 2025. Though, these requests have not yet been fulfilled, contrasting with the availability of free mpox vaccines.
GAT is strongly advising individuals at risk – specifically MSM, those within related social or sexual networks, and people with multiple sexual partners – to protect themselves through vaccination. The organization currently prescribes and administers the hepatitis A vaccine, purchased independently by patients, at its GAT Checkpoint LX and GAT Intendente centers.
