Toyota Launches Electric Hilux with Limited Range, Towing Capacity Raising Concerns for Professional Use

PARIS – ‌Toyota has unveiled⁢ a new generation of its Hilux pickup truck, including a fully electric variant, but early specifications suggest the electric model may be impractical for many professional users. The electric Hilux features a 59.2 kWh battery ⁤pack, delivering a maximum range of just 240 km (WLTP) – likely around 100 km in real-world conditions with ‌motorway driving.

The introduction of an electric Hilux marks Toyota’s entry into the electric ‌pickup market, offering a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system producing 196 horsepower adn 473 Nm of torque. However, the electric version significantly⁣ compromises on capabilities crucial for commercial applications. While the thermal Hilux⁤ maintains a 3,500 kg towing capacity⁣ and 1,000 kg payload, the electric model is limited to 1,600 kg‌ towing and 715 kg payload.

The new hilux will continue to be offered in ‍various body styles. Fast charging is supported up to 150 kW, enabling a 10-80% ⁣charge in approximately 30 minutes. Pricing ⁣for the new⁣ Hilux has not yet been‍ announced, but is expected to increase compared to the current model, with the thermal⁣ version facing meaningful ecological penalties in some markets. The electric Hilux will be exempt from‍ this tax.
