Mamdani, born October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda, to Ugandan-Indian Muslim parents – filmmaker Mira Nair and Columbia University professor Mahmud Mamdani – is slated to assume office on January 1, 2026. He immigrated to the United States at age seven, becoming a U.S. citizen in 2018. Prior to his mayoral run, mamdani served in the New York State Legislature, elected in November 2020 as the first Ugandan and third Muslim member of that body.
Trump’s comments echo accusations leveled against Mamdani by opponents who claim he intends to transform New York into a “Muslim paradise ruled by jihadists.” The former president previously vowed to “stop communism” in the United States following Mamdani’s primary victory over incumbent Andrew Cuomo, who subsequently ran as an independent.
