Typhoon Kalmaegi Brings Further Misery to Flood-Ravaged Vietnam – Live Updates
Hanoi, Vietnam – Typhoon Kalmaegi made landfall in central Vietnam today, compounding an already dire situation as the nation continues to grapple with widespread flooding and landslides that have claimed at least 35 lives. The storm’s arrival threatens to exacerbate damage in areas still reeling from days of record rainfall and overflowing rivers, hindering rescue efforts and potentially displacing thousands more.
Vietnam is particularly vulnerable to typhoons and flooding due to its extensive coastline and mountainous terrain. This latest disaster strikes as communities, including popular tourist destinations like the UNESCO-listed city of Hue and the historic town of Hoi An, are already submerged. The hoai River in Hoi An has overflowed, forcing residents to navigate the city by boat. More than 100,000 homes are currently flooded, and authorities have reported over 150 landslides across the contry.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh convened an emergency online meeting to coordinate the national response. “We must reach isolated areas and ensure people have food, drinking water, and essential supplies. No one shoudl be left hungry or cold,” he stated, emphasizing the urgency of providing aid to affected populations.
The national disaster agency reports the death toll currently stands at 35, with fears the number will rise as rescue teams gain access to previously isolated regions. Vietnam’s environment ministry is monitoring the situation closely, assessing the full extent of the damage and coordinating relief efforts. Residents are urged to heed evacuation orders and remain vigilant as Typhoon Kalmaegi moves inland.
