Ovechkin reaches Historic Milestone, Becomes First NHL Player to Score 900 Goals
Alex Ovechkin made National Hockey League history Wednesday night, becoming the first player to reach 900 career goals. The Washington Capitals captain scored against the St. Louis Blues, adding to a legacy already cemented as one of the greatest goal-scorers in professional hockey.
Ovechkin’s achievement arrives as he navigates the final year of his current contract, perhaps marking the last major round-number milestone for the three-time MVP and nine-time league goal-leader. The pursuit of 1,000 goals remains a significant, though challenging, ambition. This accomplishment underscores Ovechkin’s remarkable consistency and durability throughout his career, defying expectations even as he enters what many consider the twilight of his playing days.
he first reached the 100-goal mark on Oct.12,2007,in his 167th game. Subsequent milestones followed at increasingly spaced intervals: Goal No. 200 came on Feb.5,2009 (game 296); no. 300 on April 5, 2011 (game 473); No. 400 on dec. 20, 2013 (game 634); No. 500 on Jan. 10, 2016 (game 801); No. 600 on march 12, 2018 (game 990); No.700 on Feb. 22, 2020 (game 1,144); No. 800 on Dec. 13, 2022 (game 1,305); and most recently, No. 900 on Nov. 5, 2025 (game 1,504).
Longtime teammate T.J.Oshie, who retired in June, expressed unwavering confidence in Ovechkin’s ability to continue scoring.”It’s insane to think about four, five, six years ago,” Oshie said last week. ”Anyone that says, ‘Can Ovi do this?’ I’m like, ’Yeah, probably.'” Oshie further stated, “Even with the slow start here, if someone asks me if he’s going to score 30 this year, I’d say, ‘Yes, guaranteed.’ He just finds a way to prove people wrong every time people think that he’s down and out. … There’s been plenty of time for me to come to terms with not putting limits on the big man.”
