EdUHK Hosts Diplomats for Insightful “Ambassadors Talk”
Hong Kong – The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) recently welcomed two distinguished Chinese diplomats for a special lecture series, “Ambassadors Talk on Campus,” designed to broaden students’ understanding of international relations adn China’s role on the global stage. The event, held on October 31st, 2025, drew a large audience of faculty and students to the Tai po campus.
The lecture was a collaborative effort between EdUHK and the China Foreign Affairs university (CFAU), and featured Luo Linquan, Vice-President of the China Public Diplomacy Association, and Sun gongyi, former Chinese Ambassador to Mauritius. Both diplomats shared compelling stories and insights gleaned from decades of experience navigating the complexities of international diplomacy.
EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin opened the event, emphasizing the crucial role of diplomacy in safeguarding national interests and projecting a nation’s values and vision. He highlighted diplomacy’s necessity in navigating the increasingly intricate landscape of global affairs.
Luo Linquan captivated the audience with a detailed account of the extraordinary 2011 evacuation of Chinese nationals from Libya. He described the massive logistical undertaking – utilizing cruise ships, chartered flights, and hundreds of coaches – coordinated by the Chinese Embassy in Greece, which successfully brought 13,185 citizens to safety. This operation,he explained, exemplified the “people-centered” philosophy guiding China’s diplomatic efforts.
Sun Gongyi’s presentation focused on the deepening relationship between china and Africa. He detailed the tangible benefits of the Belt and Road Initiative during his time as ambassador to Mauritius, noting that China became the island nation’s largest trading partner under his tenure. His talk illustrated the practical request of China’s evolving diplomatic approach in Africa.
A lively Q&A session, moderated by Professor Lee, allowed students to directly engage with the ambassadors, posing questions about contemporary Chinese diplomatic strategies and the future role of Hong Kong in international affairs. Recognizing the broader educational value, EdUHK also live-streamed the event to local secondary schools, extending its reach beyond the university campus.
The “Ambassadors Talk on Campus” represents a significant step in the implementation of a memorandum of understanding signed between EdUHK and CFAU in March 2025. This agreement established the Institute for International Relations, a collaborative venture aimed at strengthening research and education in international relations and Chinese foreign affairs, and solidifying EdUHK’s commitment to cultivating globally-minded students.
