Mobile Coverage Set to⁤ Expand Globally with Satellite Technology in ‍2026

OSLO, NORWAY – Mobile connectivity is poised for a meaningful leap forward, with direct-to-satellite‍ communication expected to ⁢become a reality for everyday smartphones as early as 2026. This advancement promises coverage in ⁣areas currently ‍lacking traditional cellular network access, utilizing a system where ⁣phones connect directly to satellites for voice, messaging, and‌ data.

Currently, Mobile Satellite service (MSS) allows communication via satellite when ground networks are unavailable. The signal is⁣ routed from the satellite to⁤ a ground‌ station, then connected to the telecommunications network or the internet. This process operates on dedicated frequencies, autonomous of national mobile operators. While phones⁣ with this capability aren’t yet available, they are anticipated to enter the market in the coming years, potentially including future generations of the iPhone.

An choice approach, mirroring practices in the⁤ USA, would involve utilizing existing mobile operator frequencies for satellite communication. However, this would necessitate securing permits for ‍operator-specific bands in each country, requiring agreements with individual⁤ operators and approval from national authorities.Coordination⁤ would also be crucial to mitigate ⁣interference and ensure compatibility with existing base stations.

Experts note that these initial satellite ⁤services will provide data and⁣ voice ⁤connectivity, though not at the speed and quality currently offered by modern terrestrial mobile‍ networks.

The potential for ⁢collaboration between Starlink and‍ Apple is gaining traction. Starlink already offers a consumer service in ⁤the US through T-Mobile, enabling satellite connectivity on standard mobile phones. Moreover,‌ Starlink/SpaceX recently acquired Echostar, granting⁣ them access to⁤ the 2GHz MSS band in Europe with a license valid until 2027.

Apple currently utilizes Globalstar for SOS functionality‍ in iPhones ‍and has invested considerably in Globalstar’s progress.⁣ Globalstar has launch agreements with SpaceX ‍to‍ deploy new satellites using the Falcon ⁣9 rocket. While rumors suggest a potential acquisition of Globalstar by SpaceX/Starlink, no confirmed agreement currently exists.
