Corona Variant Stratus drives Booster Recommendations as Fall Approaches
Berlin, Germany – October 22, 2025 – Health officials are urging vulnerable populations to receive updated COVID-19 booster vaccinations this fall as the Stratus variant continues to circulate and demonstrate dominance. Current vaccines remain effective against Stratus, but waning immunity necessitates renewed protection, particularly for those at higher risk of severe illness.
The Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) recommends booster shots for all individuals aged 60 and over, and also people with pre-existing medical conditions. This guidance comes as respiratory infections, including both COVID-19 and influenza, pose an increased strain on healthcare systems and individual health. Experts note that respiratory illnesses can exacerbate cardiovascular risks, making vaccination a proactive step toward heart health.
To maximize convenience and protection, individuals are encouraged to receive their COVID-19 booster and annual flu shot concurrently. This combined approach saves time and provides robust defense against two potentially serious illnesses. The Stiko recommendations are available on the Robert Koch Institute website https://www.rki.de/SharedDocs/FAQs/DE/Impfen/COVID-19/FAQ_Liste_STIKO_Empfehlungen.html.
