Staunton Considers Extending Swim Season Following Pool House Renovations
STAUNTON,VA – The City of Staunton is exploring the possibility of extending the operating season for its public pools, possibly thru Labor Day,following planned improvements to the Gypsy Hill Park adn Montgomery Hall Park pool facilities. The discussion gained momentum at the Oct.9 Staunton City Council meeting, with city officials expressing optimism about the prospect.
Currently, pool operations are limited by the availability of student lifeguards, who return to school in the fall. Though, City Manager Leslie Beauregard indicated staffing challenges are the primary hurdle to a longer season. “I am very excited about possibly, hopefully… I would love to, fingers crossed, work very hard to get the season extended through Labor Day,” Beauregard said. “I think that would be amazing with a new pool house.”
The planned pool house renovations, expected to be completed by the start of the next swim season, include ground-level access with a direct walkway to the pool deck, new unisex restrooms with enhanced privacy, and a covered concession area.
Parks and Recreation Director Greg tuttle confirmed that extending the season is under consideration for both pool locations. “No other issues prohibit us from staying open longer,” Tuttle stated. ”Staffing is the main issue.”
The potential extension would apply to both the Gypsy Hill park and Montgomery Hall Park pools if approved.
