AUSTIN, TEXAS – Max Verstappen‘s resurgence in the Formula 1 championship standings, fueled by subtle car upgrades and a shift in momentum, has transformed the title race into a three-way battle, challenging McLaren‘s hopes for their first drivers’ championship since Lewis Hamilton in 2008. The unexpected challenge comes as internal pressure mounts within McLaren, specifically surrounding Oscar Piastri‘s recent struggles and Lando Norris’s growing position as the team’s leading contender.
The championship fight, once seemingly within McLaren’s grasp,is now complicated by Verstappen’s improved performance. Red Bull’s mechanical upgrades – including adjustments to the skid blocks under the car to enhance aerodynamics - have demonstrably boosted the Dutchman’s pace. This coincides with a dip in form for Piastri, who has voiced concerns about being “out of rhythm” with his car, particularly in challenging crosswind conditions, and a missed chance for Norris to capitalize on Verstappen’s earlier struggles in Austin.
Piastri collided with Norris during the Saturday sprint race in Austin. He needs a “reset” before the next race in Mexico. Despite the points difference, Norris appears better positioned to challenge Verstappen currently. He nearly overtook Verstappen in the Austin Grand Prix but lost second place to Charles Leclerc at the start.
Verstappen’s recent success, coupled with favorable upcoming races - Mexico, brazil, and Las Vegas, where he has previously won – suggests a remarkable comeback is increasingly plausible. The title fight is no longer a two-horse race, but a genuine contest between Verstappen, Norris, and Leclerc.
