Call of Duty Criticism: Schofield Says Series Has Declined

Former Call of Duty director Claims Series Quality declined After His Exit

Glen Schofield, former director of several acclaimed Call of Duty titles, has publicly criticized the current state of the franchise, asserting that none of the games released as his departure from Sledgehammer Games in 2018 have been “really good.” Schofield led development on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011), Advanced Warfare (2014), and WWII (2017)-games widely considered among the series’ strongest installments. modern Warfare 3 was the last Call of Duty game to receive an Action Game of the Year award, with his other titles receiving nominations.

“I hate to say it, but since I left Sledgehammer, none of the games have been really good,” Schofield told Video Games Chronicle in a recent interview. he specifically cited the score of 50 received by the 2023 release, Modern Warfare 3, noting that while sales remain strong, the games “just aren’t what they used to be.”

Schofield acknowledged the continued strength of studios like Treyarch but expressed a longing for the creative environment he experienced earlier in his career. “I was lucky, I worked in the heyday of EA and Activision. Back then we made really special things,” he stated.

Prior to his criticism, Schofield founded Striking Distance Studios, the developer of The Callisto Protocol. The game received mixed reviews, and Schofield subsequently left the studio in 2023.
