Illinois State ‍University Faculty⁤ Member Arrested After Allegedly Disrupting ‌Turning Point USA Event

NORMAL, Ill. ⁣- An Illinois State University‌ faculty member was arrested Tuesday and charged with criminal⁤ damage to property and disorderly conduct​ after allegedly ⁢overturning ⁣a table displaying materials for Turning Point USA, a conservative student organization. The incident occurred⁢ during a campus event intended to recruit new members.

The arrest highlights ongoing tensions surrounding free speech‍ and political expression on college campuses ⁣nationwide. According to Illinois State University Police⁤ Department reports,Dr.⁤ Julio⁢ Cabrera, an associate professor in the⁤ Department ‍of History, allegedly flipped a⁤ table set ​up by Turning Point USA students in the Bone Student Center. Witnesses stated Cabrera also verbally confronted the students before being taken⁣ into custody by university police.

“He came up‌ to the table and started yelling at⁣ us about our organization and our beliefs,” ‌recounted student organizer Emily‍ Johnson. “Then, without warning, he just⁢ flipped ‌the whole table⁢ over, scattering all of⁣ our flyers and materials.”
