‘SNL’ Star Bowen Yang Will Miss Tonight’s Show to Receive Academy Museum Vantage Award
Bowen Yang will be absent from Saturday night Live tonight, October 19, as he is set to receive the Vantage award at the fifth annual Academy Museum gala in Los Angeles. the recognition honors Yang as “a trailblazer bringing laughter, heart, and representation to the screen,” according to the Academy Museum’s Instagram post yesterday.
While Yang will miss live duties on SNL, including his usual Weekend Update segment, fans can still expect to see him on the show this week.Deadline confirmed Yang was in Studio 8H earlier this week filming a pre-taped sketch. The absence comes as SNL is currently hosted by Sabrina Carpenter, who is pulling double-duty as both host and musical guest – a first for Season 51. Other Academy Museum gala honorees include Penélope Cruz, Walter Salles, and Bruce springsteen.
Yang reacted to the announcement of the award with a humorous post on social media, joking about the image used for his tribute: “academy museum announcing my death,” accompanied by a heart emoji. he is known on SNL for his recurring portrayal of disgraced Congress member George Santos, who was recently released from prison after former President Donald Trump commuted his sentence on October 17.
Season 51 of SNL premiered earlier this month with Bad bunny as host and Doja Cat as the musical guest, followed by Amy Poehler hosting with artist Role Model. Carpenter’s appearance marks her second time as a musical guest and her SNL hosting debut.
