Austin, Texas – November 18, 2023 – Max Verstappen capitalized on first-lap carnage at teh Circuit of the Americas today, securing victory in the Formula 1 united States Grand Prix sprint race. The race was instantly impacted by a multi-car collision in the opening turn, eliminating several contenders, including McLaren drivers Lando Norris adn Oscar Piastri.
The incident unfolded as the field jostled for position into Turn 1. Contact between norris and Piastri triggered a chain reaction, drawing in other cars and forcing both McLaren drivers to retire from the race. Verstappen, starting in second position, navigated the chaos cleanly and quickly overtook pole-sitter Charles Leclerc to assume the lead, a position he would maintain throughout the 17-lap sprint.Sergio Pérez finished second, completing a Red Bull Racing one-two, while Leclerc held onto third.
The sprint race result significantly extends Verstappen’s championship lead, further solidifying his dominance in the 2023 season. With only the main Grand Prix remaining in Austin, the Red Bull driver is poised to continue his record-breaking run. The collision for the McLaren team represents a setback in their battle for fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship, with Alpine now looking to capitalize on the opportunity.
“it was a bit tight in Turn 1, but I just focused on my own line,” Verstappen said after the race. “We had a good start, and then it was all about managing the tires.” The main Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday, November 19th, where Verstappen will again be the favorite to win.
