Mammoth Roll Past Sharks Behind Schmaltz Hat Trick
Salt Lake City, Utah – October 17, 2025 – Nick Schmaltz recorded his second career hat trick, powering teh Utah Mammoth to a decisive 6-3 victory over the san Jose Sharks Friday night at Delta Center. The performance marked the Mammoth’s second consecutive win.
Schmaltz ignited the offense early, scoring twice in the first period before completing the hat trick just 54 seconds into the third with a quick first-time shot, extending the Mammoth’s lead to 4-2.
Clayton Keller contributed a goal and three assists, while Liam O’Brien and Michael Carcone also found the back of the net for Utah. Mammoth goaltender Karel Vejmelka stopped 18 shots.
The Sharks, however, continued to struggle, falling to 0-2-2 to start the season with their fourth consecutive loss. Macklin Celebrini, Jeff skinner, and Tyler Toffoli each scored for San Jose, while Yaraslov Askarov made 28 saves in net.
Elsewhere in the NHL:
* Detroit Red Wings 3, Tampa Bay Lightning 2 (OT): Dylan Larkin scored with 1:24 remaining in overtime to lift detroit over Tampa Bay. Rookie Axel Sandin-Pellikka scored his first career goal, assisted by Larkin, who has now registered a point in all five of the Red Wings’ games this season. John Gibson made 31 saves for Detroit, while Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 29 shots for Tampa Bay.
* Washington Capitals 5, Minnesota Wild 1: dylan Strome led the Capitals with two goals and two assists, and Alex Ovechkin scored his 898th career goal as Washington secured its fourth straight win. Ovechkin also added an assist. Logan Thompson made 13 saves for the victory.
* Vancouver Canucks 3, Chicago Blackhawks 2 (PS): Brock Boeser scored the lone goal in a four-round shootout, extending the Vancouver canucks’ winning streak against the Chicago Blackhawks to 11 games. Kevin Lankinen stopped all four Chicago skaters in the shootout, after making 31 saves in regulation and overtime.
