bietigheim Awaits: TUSEM Faces League Leaders in Tough Road Match
Essen’s handball team, TUSEM, prepares for a challenging away game against SG BBM Bietigheim, currently undefeated in league play. The match pits TUSEM against the league leaders, who boast a 12:2 points record following relegation from the first league. Bietigheim has won all three home games at the EgeTrans Arena, wiht thier only setbacks coming in away matches against Nordhorn and Nettelstedt (both 27:27) and a cup defeat to Großwallstadt (34:35).
The game comes as TUSEM adjusts to recent changes, including the departure of Lev Szuharev to Würzburg due to limited sporting prospects. Sporting director Herbert Stauber praised Szuharev, stating, “Lev is a hard-working guy with a very fine character. After a short time, he already speaks perfect German and has integrated well. We wish him all the best and much success in his new challenge.”
Head coach Daniel Haase is focused on improving TUSEM’s defense after a closely contested game against Großwallstadt. “The game against TVG could have just as easily turned out the other way around, we conveyed that to the team afterwards. We clearly showed the boys what didn’t go well and raised their heads. The boys also do a lot of things well, we are dangerous offensively with over 30 goals on average. But at the moment it has to be the defense, we have to improve there,” Haase said.
For TUSEM backcourt player Max Hejny, the match represents a return to his former club, where he played for three years. Both teams feature a player named Tom Wolf, though the Essen player is 18 years old while Bietigheim’s is 31 and they are not related.
Haase acknowledges the difficulty of the match but remains optimistic. “I think that every game in the league can be competitive and so we also have an prospect to take something from Bietigheim. The SG has a well-rehearsed, ripped-off team with a good coach. They didn’t have any major upheavals after relegation. We are in a positive mood and haven’t lost faith in ourselves.”
