Man Pleads Guilty to Second-Degree Murder in Wife’s Strangulation
WINNIPEG, MB - A Winnipeg man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Tuesday in the death of his wife, Brenda Rus, who was found strangled in her home last year. Robert Robert, 37, admitted to killing Rus, 36, ending a case that highlighted the dangers faced by individuals experiencing intimate partner violence, notably during separation.
The guilty plea brings a close to the criminal proceedings, precluding any appeal. Rus’s death sparked renewed calls for awareness surrounding the risks associated with leaving abusive relationships and the importance of safety planning. The case underscores the tragic consequences of domestic violence and the need for support systems for those attempting to escape abusive situations.
According to court, the couple was in the process of separating when Rus was killed. The Crown Attorney stated that “repeated deception and emotional manipulation” characterized the relationship, making a peaceful resolution difficult. Rus had been attempting to establish boundaries and uphold her values, actions that ultimately led to her death.
outside the courtroom, Penny salamon, a close friend of Rus for 38 years, emphasized the heightened danger during separation. “Separations are a dangerous time for people experiencing intimate partner violence, and that thay shouldn’t confront their abusers alone,” Salamon said. She expressed a wish that Rus had involved police or had a support person present when confronting her husband.
“There’s too many femicides and it’s as,unfortunately,as much as you wont to blurt out how much … you want to leave them now,it’s very dangerous when you know they’re violent. Get the police involved in helping you walk away. Have a plan in place. Just don’t do it alone,” Salamon added.”She did not deserve to die. He could have walked away and let her live.”
Robert remained silent when given the chance to address the court. With the guilty plea entered, sentencing will be scheduled at a later date.
