Spain Squad Debate Intensifies as Euro 2024 list nears
Analysts are increasingly focusing their discussion on the final roster for Spain’s Euro 2024 campaign, with the potential exclusion of Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde becoming a central point of contention. While injuries to other players are creating new variables, the conversation has largely shifted to who will ultimately be cut from Luis de la Fuente’s squad as the deadline approaches.
The debate surrounding Balde’s inclusion stems from the strong performance of other left-back options, especially Cucurella. According to Luis García, Balde’s absence from the final list wouldn’t be a significant concern “when Cucurella is at such a high level.” David Sánchez echoed this sentiment, stating Balde “is about to go” with Spain, comparing his situation to Marcos Llorente, who was also considered a potential exclusion before being deemed necessary for the team.
Joseba Larrañaga highlighted that the current wave of injuries will inevitably lead to arduous decisions, predicting “six or seven“ players will be left out onc the definitive list is announced. Sánchez reiterated his belief that Balde is unlikely to receive a call-up,emphasizing his assessment is “thinking about the final list.”
Guille Uzquiano downplayed the intensity of the current debate, suggesting it doesn’t compare to past controversies, such as the exclusion of Raúl from previous national team selections. He stated, “One may miss Balde, another may say what he wants about Marcos Llorente or Pablo Barrios… but they are minor debates. There is not going to be a national debate like when Raúl was not there.“
