Apple Focuses on Hardware Chief John Turners as CEO succession Looms
CUPERTINO, CA – October 12, 2024 – Apple is reportedly increasing its focus on John Turners, currently Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, as a potential successor to CEO Tim Cook, who will turn 65 next month. The shift in attention comes amid expectations of imminent management changes at the tech giant, according to a report from Bloomberg News.
Turners,50,is gaining prominence as a key decision-maker regarding product roadmaps, features, and overall strategy, extending his influence beyond his customary hardware engineering role. Bloomberg News noted a recent increase in Turners’ visibility in interviews, particularly in the past few weeks, following years of presenting new macbooks and iPads.
Having spent over 20 years at Apple,Turners possesses extensive knowledge and experience, positioning him as a viable candidate for the CEO position. His age – the same as Cook’s when he became CEO in 2011 – is also seen as an advantage, perhaps allowing for a decade of consistent leadership.
Other potential successors include former Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams, who stepped down from his role earlier this year and is planning to retire at the end of 2024. craig Federighi, 56, Senior Vice president of Software Engineering, and Greg Joswiak, 62, Senior Vice president of Worldwide Marketing, are also being considered.Federighi has been instrumental in product launches since joining Apple in 2009, while Joswiak, a veteran of Apple since 1987, oversaw the introductions of the iPad and iPhone.
While Cook has not publicly announced any plans for retirement or resignation, industry analysts anticipate significant personnel changes at Apple due to recent executive departures. Even if Cook were to step down as CEO, it is widely expected he would remain involved in the company’s management, potentially as chairman of the board, following the examples of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Oracle founder Larry Ellison.
