Diatomaceous Earth: A Misunderstood Stink Bug Solution,Experts Say

New York,NY ‌- As fall brings a surge in stink bug activity, homeowners⁣ are increasingly turning⁤ to DIY pest control methods, including diatomaceous⁤ earth (DE). However, pest control ‍professionals are cautioning that while DE can be part of a preventative strategy, its not ⁢a swift fix for ⁢existing infestations and must‍ be applied strategically to be effective.

According to Kris⁣ Bagnara, associate certified entomologist and Director of Service at All U Need Pest Control, a‍ thin,‍ inconspicuous layer of food-grade diatomaceous earth applied around potential entry‌ points -⁣ doors, windows, and other cracks‍ – can act‍ as a deterrent.”Apply a face mask in the right places-specifically around doors, windows, and other entry points that you feel⁣ could ⁣be entries ⁤into ‌your home,” ⁣Bagnara ⁤advises. Though, she stresses that “more isn’t always better,” as stink ‍bugs will actively avoid obvious ‌piles or⁢ barriers.

Despite its popularity as a ⁢natural ⁤pest control ⁣solution, both ‍Bagnara ⁢and fellow ‌expert Carpenter agree that⁣ DE isn’t the‌ most effective method for controlling stink bugs already inside a‌ home. Instead, focusing on preventative perimeter treatments is ⁢key. Stink bugs are drawn to⁤ light, warmth, and food sources, making sealing entry points crucial.

“Sealing‍ up cracks and entry ‍points, removing⁢ debris around your home, ⁢making sure your garage door is sealed and windows ‌are ‍shut tightly, and removing any standing moisture around and in your ‌home are always the most effective ways⁤ to prevent⁣ stink bugs from getting inside in ‍the first place,”‍ Bagnara explains. For stink bugs that have already entered, vacuuming is the recommended method of removal.

If preventative ⁣measures and vacuuming ⁣prove insufficient, Bagnara recommends⁢ contacting a licensed⁢ pest ‍control specialist. ‍Professionals‌ can⁢ identify hidden entry⁣ points, apply⁣ targeted perimeter treatments, and provide ongoing solutions for managing stink bug ⁤infestations.
