New COVID Variant Drives Hospitalizations, Doctor Warns
avranches, France – A rapidly spreading COVID-19 variant, dubbed the “Frankenstein variant” due to its origins in Omicron, is contributing to a surge in hospitalizations, according to Dr. Emmanuel Piednoir, an infectious disease specialist at the avranches-Granville hospital center.
The variant began circulating widely in September, initially causing mild cases primarily among children under 15. Though, Dr. Piednoir notes the infection has since spread to older populations, leading to a concerning exponential increase in hospital admissions. “This variant is spreading a lot, and with a high number of cases, it’s adding important pressure to the hospital system,” he explained.
The rising case numbers are already impacting hospital capacity. In response, the Avranches-Granville hospital center has reinstated mandatory masking for all staff when interacting with patients.
Dr. Piednoir also highlighted the importance of preventative measures, notably vaccination, as the annual anti-flu and anti-COVID vaccination campaign launches on October 15th. He expressed concern over last year’s low vaccination rates, citing only 63% coverage among individuals over 65 and a mere 25% among at-risk individuals under 65. “That’s not enough,” he stated, emphasizing the link between low vaccination rates and severe illness. “Last year, we saw many deaths and intensive care admissions due to the flu - and thes were overwhelmingly among those who hadn’t been vaccinated. this placed a considerable strain on hospitals.”
Dr. Piednoir urges individuals to get vaccinated through their doctor, nurse, pharmacist, or midwife. He also stresses the continued importance of preventative measures like mask-wearing and hand hygiene. he advises anyone experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, particularly those at higher risk of severe illness, to get tested promptly.
