New York City Sues Social Media Giants Over Youth Mental health Crisis
New York City has launched a legal challenge against major social media platforms – including Facebook, Google, Snapchat, and TikTok – alleging they are fueling a mental health crisis among children and teenagers through addictive design practices.
The lawsuit, a extensive 327-page document filed in Manhattan federal court, details the extent of screen time among the city’s high school students. A staggering 77.3% report spending three or more hours daily engaging with screens – encompassing television, computers, and smartphones. This trend disproportionately affects girls, with 82.1% reporting similar levels of daily screen use.
According to the city, these platforms are intentionally engineered to exploit the psychological and neurological vulnerabilities of young people, fostering compulsive usage patterns for financial gain. the defendants named in the suit include Meta Platforms (parent company of Facebook and Instagram), Alphabet (owner of Google and YouTube), Snap (snapchat), and ByteDance (tiktok).
The city’s complaint centers on accusations of gross negligence and the disruption of public order. This action places New York City alongside a growing number of plaintiffs - over 2,000 similar lawsuits have been filed in federal courts across the United States, with a significant concentration in Oakland, California.
Representing the city’s interests are not only municipal authorities but also its school system and public health agencies, reflecting the broad impact of this alleged crisis. New york City’s population of 8.48 million includes approximately 1.8 million children under the age of 18.
Google, responding to the allegations, has denied the claims specifically related to YouTube. Spokesperson José Castañeda stated the accusations “are simply not true.”
