Putin Signals Nuclear arms Race, Promises New Weaponry Amidst Treaty Concerns
MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on October 10th that a nuclear arms competition is “already happening,” and announced Russia is developing new weapons systems. he indicated Russia would respond in kind if the united States proceeds with nuclear weapons testing, and warned of retaliation should the U.S. transfer long-range “Tomahawk” missiles to Ukraine.
Putin stated, ”I think we will soon be able to announce the new weapon we have previously reported. It is now being created, undergoing tests, and they are accomplished.” He emphasized that Russia possesses the worldS largest nuclear arsenal.
The Russian leader indicated that the potential failure of the U.S. to extend the main weapons control agreement would not be decisive for Russia. He added that Russia would only conduct nuclear tests if other nations do so first, stating, “Some countries are considering this possibility. As far as we certainly know, they are even getting ready. So I say – if they are tested,we will do the same.” he acknowledged such testing could be useful for national security but represents a negative development for arms control.
Regarding potential U.S. aid to Ukraine, Putin warned, “If it still happens, Russia will answer by strengthening its air defense.”
Putin initially proposed continuing adherence to restrictions outlined in the Strategic Offensive Weapons Reduction Treaty beyond its 2026 expiration on September 22nd,and again on February 5th,to prevent a strategic arms competition. On October 6th, U.S. President Donald Trump responded that the idea “sounds like a good idea” but offered no specifics.
On Wednesday, the Russian State Duma approved the termination of a 2000 treaty with the U.S. concerning the disposal of weapons-grade plutonium. This material is a key component in the production of nuclear weapons.
