Microsoft Launches Windows Backup for Enterprise, Streamlining Device Transitions
REDMOND, WA - February 29, 2024 – Microsoft has begun rolling out Windows Backup for Organizations, a new feature designed to simplify device upgrades and refreshes for enterprise users. The tool allows IT teams to securely back up and restore Windows settings, preferences, and Microsoft Store-installed apps on Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems.
The feature, configurable through Intune’s backup and restore policy settings, is intended to provide a consistent user experience during transitions like upgrades from Windows 10 to Windows 11 or when refreshing Windows 11 PCs.
“This enterprise-grade feature helps IT teams streamline device transitions by securely preserving user settings and Microsoft Store app installations,” Microsoft explained in a recent Microsoft 365 Message Center update. ”Whether upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 or refreshing Windows 11 PCs, this feature ensures a consistent user experience and supports business continuity through robust backup and rapid recovery capabilities.”

Data is stored in the Exchange Online cloud, within the Country/Region selected during tenant creation in the admin portal. Administrators can view their tenant’s data storage location in the Tenant Admin Center under admin > Settings > Org Settings > Association Profile > Data Location.
Microsoft states that customer data is protected using encryption and will only be accessed when necessary for troubleshooting or legal compliance. “Microsoft personnel may use customer data only for purposes compatible with providing you with the contracted services, such as troubleshooting and improving features like protection from malware,” the company added.
