Merz Proposes Global Compulsory Service as Bundeswehr Faces Staffing Crisis
BERLIN – in a direct response too Defense Minister Boris Pistorius‘s push for increased voluntary service in the Bundeswehr, CDU leader Friedrich Merz has advocated for a compulsory year of service for all young Germans, ahead of a crucial Bundestag debate. Merz stated the aim is to achieve a “common goal” as the military grapples with important staffing shortages.
The debate centers on securing sufficient personnel for the Bundeswehr, which faces the challenge of recruiting approximately 80,000 additional soldiers to reach NATO’s recommended troop strength of 260,000 – deemed necessary to deter potential aggression, especially from Russia.Pistorius’s draft law focuses on bolstering voluntariness and increasing financial incentives, but Merz argues a broader approach is needed.
According to reporting by Merkur.de, Pistorius accused the CDU/CSU bloc of obstructing his military service law on Saturday, criticizing their actions as “negligent” and perhaps delaying the introduction of new military service and the reintroduction of military registration. He told the ”Handelsblatt” that amendments to the draft law could further deviate from his original proposal.
The Bundeswehr’s staffing needs are pressing, with NATO requiring a force of 260,000 to effectively respond to potential threats. The upcoming parliamentary proceedings will determine the future of military service in Germany, with potential implications for national security and defense capabilities.
