Cowboys‘ Trevon Diggs Faces Potential NFL Fine After On-Field Altercation with Jets Receiver
ARLINGTON, TX – Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs is likely to face discipline from teh NFL following a fourth-quarter scuffle with New York Jets wide receiver Arian Smith during Sunday’s game, which the Cowboys won 30-6. The incident occurred with 13:47 remaining in the final quarter, seemingly unrelated to the play on the field where Jets quarterback Zach Wilson ran up the middle for no gain.
Smith initiated the altercation with a headbutt to Diggs, prompting the Cowboys cornerback to retaliate with a swing. Officials assessed a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to Diggs, enforced between downs.
The NFL has implemented a strict policy regarding player conduct, making a fine for Diggs probable. First-time offenses for “striking, kicking, tripping or kneeing” typically result in a $12,172 fine, while repeat offenses carry a $17,968 penalty.
Diggs has been fined three times previously in his career. Last season, he was assessed a $16,883 fine for a “leg whip” tackle during the cowboys’ 33-17 Week 1 victory over the Cleveland Browns.
The NFL typically announces player fines each Saturday before the following week’s games.
