Chewing Gum Test Could Revolutionize Flu Detection at Oktoberfest

Chewing Gum Could Detect Flu at Events Like Oktoberfest, ‍Researchers Say

WÜRZBURG, Germany – Scientists at the‍ University of Würzburg are developing a diagnostic chewing gum capable of detecting influenza, possibly offering a new method for early detection at large gatherings like the annual Oktoberfest. The ‌innovative technology integrates sensors into chewing gum or lollipop ⁤form, aiming for mass-market⁢ usability within approximately four years.

The project, ⁣supported‍ by ⁢the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space⁣ Travel as part of the “Influ Kau” project, seeks to revolutionize influenza detection.⁤ Currently, early identification ‌relies on traditional prevention methods, but researchers ‌envision a⁤ future where a ‍simple chew could help prevent outbreaks⁣ at major events – including the notorious “Oktoberfest ⁢flu” that impacts attendees in Munich each year. Project manager⁢ Lorenz Meinel explains,⁤ “This strategy opens up new opportunities for the worldwide early detection and fight against influenza.” ‌

Researchers are collaborating with the start-up Flareon Biotech GmbH to refine the sensor integration⁤ and prepare the diagnostic system for large-scale production. The university stated the progress process ‍is expected to ‌take around four years ⁢to complete.
