Hwaseong, South Korea – October 5, 2025 – In a moment hailed as a testament to human resilience, Yoo Byung-soo, 36, returned to K-League action today after a 14-year absence marked by a heroic battle with blood cancer (lymphoma). The forward entered the match in the 35th minute for Mars FC against Incheon United at Hwaseong Comprehensive Gyeonggi Town, receiving a standing ovation from both sets of supporters.
Yoo Byung-soo first made his mark in the K-League in 2009, joining Incheon United after being drafted from Hongik University. He quickly established himself as a prolific scorer, netting 12 goals in his debut season and following up with 22 goals the next year, earning three appearances for the South Korean national team (A-matches).
Following his initial K-League success,Yoo continued his professional career in Saudi Arabia,Russia, and Thailand before returning to Korea last year. However, a medical examination during his attempt to rejoin Mars FC revealed a devastating diagnosis.
“I conducted a CT and biopsy… The result was bad. Yoo Byung-soo was diagnosed with blood cancer (lymphoma),” the club stated.
Despite undergoing six rounds of chemotherapy, Yoo refused to relinquish his dream of returning to the field. He documented his recovery journey on social media, sharing in August, “It has been six months since the 6th chemotherapy was completed and the recovery training was started.” He acknowledged the physical toll, stating, ”I did my best as a lifelong player, but I felt the worst of my life becuase of the immunity that came down to the floor after six chemotherapy.” Despite the uncertainty, he remained determined, adding, “I can’t guarantee it, but I’m preparing for my physical condition with my mind that I want to run for a minute this season.”
While Yoo did not register a goal or assist in his return appearance, his presence on the pitch was a powerful symbol of perseverance. Following the match, he addressed Mars FC fans, expressing his gratitude via loudspeaker.
Mars FC celebrated the occasion, noting that Yoo Byung-soo had returned to the K-League stage after 5,200 days.
