Android Tightens restrictions on External APK Installs,Effective November 2024
MOUNTAIN VIEW,CA – October 4,2024 – Google is enacting stricter controls over the installation of applications from sources outside the Google Play Store, impacting Android users and developers alike. Beginning November 1, 2024, a new requirement mandates that users explicitly grant permission for each submission installed via an APK file, rather than a blanket allowance for all sources.
The change, announced by Google earlier this year, aims to bolster user security by reducing the risk of malware and malicious applications. Currently, Android allows users to enable “Install unknown apps” on a per-app basis, granting broad permission to install APKs from that specific source. The updated policy removes this broad permission, requiring a pop-up authorization window for every APK installation, even from trusted sources. this shift significantly alters the sideloading process, a common practice among developers for testing, beta programs, and users seeking apps unavailable on the Play Store.
Google stated the move is a response to evolving security threats and a commitment to protecting its user base.”These changes are designed to provide a more secure experience for users and reduce the risk of malicious apps being installed on their devices,” a Google spokesperson explained. The policy affects all Android devices running Android 14 and later, and developers distributing APKs outside of the Play Store will need to inform users about the new installation process. Users will see a prompt explaining the risks associated with installing apps from unknown sources before being asked to grant permission.
