Ohio City Residents Frustrated by Surge in Car Break-ins
CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – Residents of Ohio City awoke Wednesday morning too find over a dozen cars vandalized, with driver’s side windows smashed. The incidents are the latest in a continuing string of break-ins plaguing the neighborhood.
“There is always glass on the ground. It is every morning. There is always a different car,” said resident Calvin Thomas, reflecting the growing frustration among neighbors.
Thomas and his fiancé discovered the damage while walking their dog, finding glass scattered across the block of West 32nd and Detroit Avenue. He then discovered his own vehicle had been targeted.
“Everything was on the seat, and everything is covered in glass,” Thomas stated. “Nothing is missing. The glove compartment is opened up in the center console.”
shane Kelly’s car was also broken into, marking the second time in just two weeks he’s been a victim. “It is indeed frustrating.I know a lot of people around here to whom this has happened,” Kelly said. Each window replacement costs approximately $1,500, and includes the cost of repainting chipped areas caused by the broken glass.
Cleveland Police are actively investigating the break-ins, reviewing video footage and interviewing witnesses. Sergeant Freddy Diaz stated, “We have been working very hard around the clock to resolve this as quickly as possible.”
Police are increasing patrols in the area, focusing on identified “hot spots” through intelligence-driven policing and crime analysis.
Despite the police response, residents like Thomas and Kelly are hoping for preventative measures. “It might very well be nice if it coudl be prevented,” Thomas commented.
Cleveland Police are urging anyone who has experienced a car break-in to file a report, as increased reporting helps them pinpoint areas with the highest concentration of incidents.
