OpenAI Launches AI-Generated Video App, directly Challenging TikTok, Instagram & YouTube
SAN FRANCISCO – OpenAI has entered the social media arena with Sora, a new smartphone application focused entirely on videos generated by artificial intelligence. The launch positions the ChatGPT developer as a direct competitor too established video platforms like TikTok,Instagram,Facebook, and YouTube.
Sora distinguishes itself by allowing users to incorporate digital versions of themselves and their friends into AI-created videos. Initially, the app will be ad-free, though OpenAI has not ruled out future monetization.
The move underscores OpenAI’s expanding ambitions beyond its initial success with ChatGPT, which sparked widespread interest in AI nearly three years ago. Since then, the company has actively sought to build a thorough AI ecosystem, extending beyond chatbot technology. OpenAI recently announced the acquisition of a company founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, with plans to develop specialized AI devices, details of which remain undisclosed.
To fuel this expansion,OpenAI is rapidly building a considerable AI infrastructure. nvidia recently committed a $100 billion investment, primarily for the purchase of AI chips, and OpenAI has reportedly secured a five-year, $300 billion contract with Oracle. OpenAI chairman Sam Altman’s strategy demonstrates a clear intent to compete with major tech corporations like Meta and Google.
