Moldova‘s Ruling Party Claims Victory in Closely Watched Legislative Elections
Chisinau, Moldova – The patriotic Bloc, led by supporters of President Maia Sandu, declared victory following Sunday’s parliamentary elections in Moldova, a vote closely monitored for it’s implications on the contry’s pro-European trajectory. The leader of the Patriotic Bloc called on opposition parties and civil society groups to gather for a “peaceful presentation” before parliament on Monday noon “to defend the voting of citizens,” and warned of potential non-recognition of results should “falsifications” occur during the vote count.
These elections are pivotal for Moldova, a nation navigating geopolitical pressures between closer ties with the European Union and russian influence. A strong showing by the pro-European patriotic Bloc is expected to bolster President Sandu’s reform agenda and accelerate the country’s path toward EU membership, while a victory for opposition parties aligned with Moscow could jeopardize these efforts. the outcome will determine the composition of the 101-seat parliament and the future direction of the small Eastern European nation.
Voting was closely observed, notably regarding participation from the diaspora – which significantly contributed to Sandu’s re-election in 2024 – and the separatist region of Transnistria, traditionally leaning towards Russia. Authorities in Transnistria accused the Moldavian government of “numerous and blatant” attempts to restrict voting access for residents of the region.
Approximately twenty independent parties and candidates competed in the election. In the 2021 parliamentary elections, the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) secured a win with 52.8% of the vote, surpassing the 27.2% achieved by the bloc of socialists and communists led by Igor Dodon.
