Stampede at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam rally Leaves Over 30 Dead in Chennai
Chennai, India – A stampede at a political rally for Tamil actor and newly-minted politician vijay in Chennai, india, has left more than 30 people dead and dozens injured, authorities confirmed Sunday. The incident occurred late Saturday as supporters gathered for an event hosted by Vijay‘s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party, launched in 2024.
The rally drew massive crowds, and the cause of the stampede remains under examination. Initial reports suggest the surge occurred as attendees attempted to enter the venue to receive gifts and assistance from Vijay.
“My heart is shattered,” Vijay posted on X following the incident. “I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, stating the incident was “deeply saddening.” “My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones,” Modi said on social media. ”Wishing strength to them in this challenging time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured.”
Stampedes have tragically occurred at large gatherings in India before. In January, at least 30 people were killed during the Maha Kumbh festival as pilgrims rushed to bathe in a sacred river. Last July, 121 people died at a religious gathering in Uttar Pradesh state.
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam was founded by Vijay earlier this year, marking his entry into formal politics after decades as a leading figure in the Tamil film industry.
