Family Expresses Grave Concerns as british Couple Faces Court in Iran Amid Deteriorating Health
The family of a British couple detained in Iran has voiced serious concerns about their declining health as they appeared in court today, facing espionage charges. Lindsay Foreman and Craig Bennett’s son, speaking to BBC News, revealed his mother was reportedly receiving a drip last week and his father is suffering from repeated illnesses without adequate medical care.
The couple’s detention and the opaque legal process have caused mounting anxiety for their family, who learned last month that Lindsay Foreman had been transferred to Qarchak women’s prison, and Craig Bennett to Tehran’s central prison, both facilities known for dire conditions. The case highlights the significant risks faced by British and British-Iranian nationals traveling to Iran, prompting a travel warning from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Growth Office (FCDO).
According to Bennett, “there are real concerns around my mum and Craig’s health.” He added that his father has experienced “multiple rounds of stomach bugs, flu, dental problems, without the correct medical care.” The family is awaiting news following today’s court appearance, but anticipates a wait of “seven to 10 days” for an update.
The FCDO has warned against all travel to Iran due to the “significant risk of arrest, questioning or detention” and stated they are “deeply concerned” by the espionage charges. A spokesperson confirmed they are providing consular assistance and remain in close contact with the family.
Human rights groups have consistently criticized the conditions within Qarchak and Fashafouyeh prisons, where Foreman and Bennett are reportedly held. The family expressed worry that the FCDO was not fully informed about the court proceedings.
