Manchester United Players Must ‘Understand the Momentum’ to Overcome Last Season’s Struggles, Says Manager Ruben Amorim
BRENTFORD, England – Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has challenged his players to string together consecutive victories to begin erasing the psychological impact of a disappointing 2023-24 season. Amorim emphasized the need for a shift in mentality, especially in matches against teams traditionally considered less challenging then the Premier League’s elite.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s match against Brentford, Amorim stated that a series of wins is crucial to altering the current atmosphere within the club. “I am talking about the second one, then the third one. The feeling will change and again that is something about the surroundings that we are living for a while,” he said. He highlighted a noticeable difference in the demeanor of forward Bryan Mbeumo during difficult moments, contrasting it with the rest of the team. “If you look at Bryan [Mbeumo] in that moment when we are struggling you feel a different guy compared to the rest of the team.”
Last season, United finished eighth in the Premier League, a result that left lasting scars on the squad. While they secured notable victories against Manchester City and Arsenal, and earned a draw against Liverpool at Anfield, consistent struggles against lower-ranked opponents proved detrimental. Amorim is urging his team to approach every match with the same intensity and focus they displayed against top-six rivals.
“the crucial thing is to do the maximum and to face that game like we faced Liverpool last year because we were struggling,or the way we started the season against Arsenal,” Amorim explained. He stressed the importance of replicating the “really excited” feeling from the start of the season, adding, “I think if we as a team, if we don’t understand the momentum now, we have a big problem.”
Amorim concluded by placing the onus on the players to seize the chance and take duty for changing the club’s trajectory. “We need to understand the momentum of the club and the opportunity that we have to win the next game. So it’s on us and the responsibility is on us.”
