Del Toro Positions Himself as Primary Challenger to pogačar at World Championships
Kigali, Rwanda – Isaac del Toro has emerged as the rider most capable of challenging Tadej Pogačar‘s dominance at the UCI Road world Championships on Sunday, according to pre-race analysis. The Mexican rider’s strong performance in the time trial - finishing fifth, just five seconds off the podium – coupled with his recent racing alongside Pogačar, has positioned him as a meaningful threat in the demanding road race.
The 251.2-kilometer course features nine laps on a longer circuit, followed by a pivotal climb at Mount Kigali, and concludes with seven laps on a closing circuit containing two climbs. Pogačar is widely expected to launch an attack, but the timing and location remain uncertain.
“The longer climb at Mount Kigali should suit me best. The only problem is that it is indeed still far from the finish line,” Pogačar stated. “From me, they should have put it closer to the finish line.” He downplayed the course’s overall difficulty, noting, “You have two climbs in the circuit, but there is also a lot of descent in it, and you get those kilometers for free.”
the concern for rival nations – Belgium, Spain, Denmark, and Britain – is preventing Pogačar from gaining an unassailable lead, as he did with a 100km solo effort last year.Del Toro is identified as a key rider who could capitalize on any prospect.
Adding a complex dynamic to the race is the presence of multiple UAE Emirates-XRG riders capable of contending for a medal, including Juan Ayuso, Jay Vine, and Pavel Sivakov. While riders represent their national teams, trade team allegiances could influence race tactics. Pogačar and Del Toro have demonstrated a close relationship, even training together on Friday over the race loop.
“That’s what makes ‘El Torito’ the most intriguing wild card in Kigali,” the analysis notes. Del Toro’s recent experience racing alongside Pogačar may have provided valuable insights, and if he can maintain his form throughout the seven-hour race, he could potentially challenge for the victory. For Pogačar, Del Toro represents a significant internal challenge within his own team structure.
